Verbal Reasoning Assessment
Passage One
Over ten percent of the adult population suffers from a phobia-type of anxiety disorder characterised by an intense, irrational fear of an object or situation that interferes with the sufferers’ daily life. Although experts do not fully understand the cause of phobias, research indicates that heredity and triggering events are likely factors. There are a variety of treatments available for phobia sufferers. Cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) is a very popular, and effective method of desensitization.
This approach treats the phobia’s anxiety symptoms as conditioned behaviours that can, Through systematic exposure to the feared stimulus, be re-learned. CBT increases exposure to the feared object or situation very gradually, thereby modifying the patient’s response and developing tolerance. A less common treatment is flooding, which uses total immersion to the feared object in order to desensitize the patient. Medication is also used to treat phobias.
Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) are antidepressants that can be prescribes to reduce panic and improve confidence, though they can have negative side effects including weight gain. While phobias are among the most easily treated mental health problems, less than 25% of surferers seek treatment. If untreated, phobias can exacerbate and develop into other problems, such as depression and low self-esteem

Question 4:

Despite the high success rates of phobia treatments, most sufferers remain untreated
The majority of phobia sufferers run the risk of developing associated problems
Weight gain is the main side effect caused by taking MAO inhibitors

Passage 2
The Aztecs’s two different systems for counting time were also used by other pre-Columbian populations living in Mesoamerica. Firstly, the tonalpohualli system of 260 days was the sacred calendar, used for divination. The second xiuhpohualli system was a solar, or agricultural, calendar with 365 days. The simultaneous operation of the two systems can be compared to two rotating gears. The tonalpohualli system featured two wheels – one marked with symbols, the other with numbered days – and determined which rituals were to be performed by the Aztec priests and when. Every 52 years the starting day of both calendars aligned and this 52-year period has been termed the “calendar round” – or century.
Aztec sculptures, such as The Stone of the Five Suns, which records the Aztec creation myth are sometimes called Aztec calendars. The Stone of the Five Suns, which resides in Mexico City’s National Museum of Anthropology, consists of a system of five circular bands representing suns, or eras, surround a sun god carving. Further segments depict the 20 days of the week. It is not actually a fully functioning calendar.

Passage 3
Online computers are in constant communication with each other, as they securely transmit data using transmissions, encrypted using sophisticated digital electronics. Televisions also rely upon the encrypted communication of data. In fact the transmission of secret codes, or ciphers, has a long history dating back to the Ancient Egyptian use of hieroglyphics. Ciphers are also mentioned several times in the Bible. Today, military leaders, especially in wartime, still need to be able to send messages without fear of these being read by the enemy.
“Cryptography” is the term given to the writing of such ciphers and how these are circulated in secret. Typically this process of communication involves firstly some form of encryption of the message. Secondly, a subsequent form of deciphering by that message’s recipient. The code-breaking process is called “cryptanalysis”, which – like cryptography – is a subsector of “cryptology”.
The term “cryptography”, is used to describe the entire field of secure, encrypted communication. One example of cryptology is “enciphering”: here the letters in a secret message are replaced by letters of a code. Another example of cryptology is “encoding” where entire words or sentences are coded. The set of rules used in a particular example of cryptology need to be discovered by anyone attempting to “break” into the message.
