Three Anniversaries, One Profound Feast: Pan-Atlantic University Honours St. Josemaria Escriva

On Thursday, June 19th, Pan-Atlantic University (PAU) held a resonant and uplifting Mass in honour of St. Josemaria Escriva, the revered founder of Opus Dei, whose profound spiritual vision forms the bedrock of our university’s identity and mission. The occasion was imbued with special significance as it commemorated three pivotal anniversaries: the 100th anniversary of St. Josemaria’s priestly ordination, the 50th anniversary of his peaceful passing into heaven, and the 60th year of Opus Dei’s vibrant presence in Nigeria.

The university community gathered, to reflect upon St. Josemaria’s transformative message: that “holiness is for everyone.” This core teaching reminds us that God’s call to sanctity is not an escape from our daily lives, but rather a journey to be embraced and lived within the very fabric of our everyday circumstances, work, and relationships.

During the heartfelt homily, Reverend Father Ifeanyi Ogboh shared timeless insights inspired by St. Josemaria’s teachings. He encouraged us all to recognise that “When God enters your boat, he calls you casually… not just for yourself but to call others too,” urging each individual to embrace their unique mission. Father Ogboh’s reflections further resonated with potent reminders:

  • “Don’t let your life be barren, be useful.”
  • “An hour of study is an hour of prayer,” elevating intellectual pursuit to a spiritual exercise.
  • “If you see your way clearly, follow it, and shake off the cowardice that holds you back” a powerful exhortation to courage and conviction in one’s vocation.

He underscored that the divine call is expansive, extending beyond personal growth to inspire and serve others—a principle deeply embedded in PAU’s commitment to forming individuals dedicated to ethical leadership and societal impact.

Following the spiritual nourishment of the Mass, the atmosphere transitioned into one of warm, celebratory fellowship. Attendees were delighted to receive commemorative rosaries and prayer cards, tangible symbols of shared faith. A particularly poignant moment was the cutting of a special cake to commemorate the feast.

Pan-Atlantic University remains steadfast in its dedication to the enduring spiritual and ethical principles championed by St. Josemaria Escriva, integrating them seamlessly into our academic programmes and fostering a vibrant campus culture that nurtures excellence, integrity, and a profound sense of purpose.
