Folakemi Ogungbe, PhD
Folakemi Ogungbe, PhD, is a member of the Department of Film and Multimedia, School of Media and Communication at the Pan-Atlantic University. She holds a Ph.D in Media Studies from the University of Ibadan. She was the Creative Partnerships Coordinator for the African Hub for Sustainable Creative Economies (AHSCE), Lagos Hub, a collaborative research project involving King’s College, London and Universities of Southampton, Lagos, Nairobi and Witwatersrand between March 2022 and March 2023. She worked at the Nigerian Film Corporation as the Head of the Digital Media Unit as well as the Technical Assistant to the Managing Director/Chief Executive and at the National Film Institute as a lecturer where she taught courses in Advanced Cinematography and Film Adaptation between 2020 and 2023. She was a member of the organising committee for Zuma Film Festival from 2019 to 2023 as well as supervised digital media coverage and protocol for the festival. She served as a facilitator for the Nigerian Corporation at strategic training sessions for youth across Nigeria and was a creative director and production manager in various documentary productions for the Corporation from 2019 to 2023. She represented the Managing Director/Chief Executive of the Nigerian Film Corporation at international roundtables and conferences such as the Nigerian International Film and Television Summit (2022), the YouTube Policymakers roundtable (2022), the YouTube Africa Week (2022) and the Netflix Industry Dinner (2022). She was also an adjunct faculty at the NTA Television College in Jos where she taught Scripting, Directing and Producing from 2021 to 2022.
She is an editorial member of Fulgent: Journal of Film and Video, NFI and has been brought on board as a Film Reviewer at the African Studies Review of Cambridge Press and a peer reviewer at the Women’s Studies International Forum. She was a member of Jury at the Kano Indigenous Language Film Festival, 2022 and has been appointed a returning member of Jury for the 2023 edition scheduled for November, 2023. She was also a returning judge at the SystemSpecs Children Day Essay Competition, 2023, after serving successfully in the 2022 edition. She was recently appointed as a member of Jury for the maiden edition of the Travelling International Students Film Festival scheduled to hold in Benin in October, 2023.
Folakemi Ogungbe has published papers with Fulgent: Journal of Film and Video as well as book chapters. She also has an accepted paper with Journal of African Cultural Studies. She has presented papers at various conferences in Nigeria and at the International Federation for Theatre Research (IFTR) in Sweden. She is a fellow of the Lagos Studies Association (LSA) and has won slots at the Female Graduate Student Mentorship Program at the LSA in 2019, the Writing Workshop for Scholars, LSA 2022 and the British Academy Writing Workshop, 2023. Her work experience also includes an eleven year career in the Nigerian banking sector (First Bank Ltd) from 2006-2017 where she rose to a managerial position before quitting voluntarily to pursue her lifelong dream of being an Academic and a Filmmaker.
