The Group is dedicated to advancing cutting-edge research in Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, and Computing while embedding strong ethical, governance, and inclusivity principles from the outset. By combining technical excellence with contextually relevant applications, CAIRG develops innovative solutions that tackle Nigeria’s and Africa’s most pressing developmental challenges in healthcare, education, infrastructure, security, and finance.
Research Themes
The Computing and Artificial Intelligence Research Group (CAIRG) pursues four interconnected research themes that combine foundational AI advancements with responsible deployment and real-world impact in African contexts.
· Machine Learning & AI, focusing on development of advanced deep learning, reinforcement learning, and neural networks.
· Data Science & Analytics: With focus on Big data processing, data mining, and visualization.
· Cyber Security & Ethics: With focus on Research in cryptography, trust, and AI accountability.
· Applied AI: With focus on solutions for health informatics, education, finance, government services, agriculture, telecommunications, smart homes and IoT systems.

Activities and projects
· The Nigeria AI Scaling Hub (funded by Gates Foundation) to scale mature AI solutions responsibly in sectors such as health, agriculture, government services and education in Nigeria. $7.5m. (2026-2029).
· An AI-Driven Two-Stage Hyper-Heuristic Timetabling System for Nigerian Universities to optimise university course and examination scheduling, addressing real-world constraints in educational environments. $30K. (2026-2027).
