Background:
Ekundayo Peter Mesagan is a distinguished Nigerian economist, academic, and policy advisor whose career spans teaching, research, consultancy, and national development planning. He is a Professor of Energy & Environmental Economics in the School of Management and Social Sciences (SMSS) at Pan-Atlantic University (PAU), Lekki, Lagos, Nigeria. He is also the Alternate Director of Research and Impact at PAU. In addition to his academic role, he serves as a research fellow at the University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, demonstrating his international engagement in economic scholarship.
He is the co-founder and non-executive director of MGIG Global Services Ltd., a Lagos-based research, training and consulting firm. His expertise has been recognised at the national level, where he contributed as a member of Nigeria’s Agenda 2050 Drafting Committee under the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning. His involvement in shaping long-term national policy underscores his commitment to political economy and strategic economic planning. He plays an active role in Nigeria’s research and policy ecosystem, serving on the Review Committee for Individual Research Project (IRP) proposals at the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research (NISER), Ibadan. He is a member of the Technical and Editorial sub-committees of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), which is a one of Africa’s leading private sector think-tank that is committed to the development of a modern globally competitive and inclusive Nigerian economy. Recently, he also served as a member the IEEE Future-Ready Workforce Africa Initiative that is designed to assess Africa’s preparedness for the digital economy, identify critical skills gaps, and align education and workforce strategies with emerging global technology.
Regarding professional membership, he is a member of the governing council of the Nigerian Economic Society (NES), which provides economic policy advisory to the federal government of Nigeria on a periodic basis. He is a full member of the Nigerian Association for Energy Economics (NAEE), and the Nigerian Institute of Management (Chartered). He is also a member of the Economic Commission for Africa Young Economists Network (ECA-YEN), the Academy of African Business and Development (AABD), and the Pan-African Coalition for Sustainable Digital Transformation (PC4DT), which focuses on advancing a sustainable, inclusive, and sovereign digital future for Africa.
Academically, Prof. Mesagan holds a B.Sc. in Economics (First Class) from Obafemi Awolowo University, an M.Sc. in Economics (Distinction) and a PhD in Economics from the University of Lagos. His doctoral thesis, titled “Effects of Trade Flows and Institutions on Environmental Quality in Sub-Saharan Africa, 1996–2016,” was awarded the best PhD thesis in the Humanities, which covers the faculties of Law, Environmental Sciences, Management Sciences, Education, Arts, and Social Sciences at the University of Lagos in 2020. A prolific researcher, he has published widely in both local and international journals. He is recognised as one of the pioneering scholars to identify capital investment as a key channel for improving the energy-pollution nexus. His interests include energy policy, environmental sustainability, and macroeconomic modelling.
Research interest: Environmental Sustainability, Energy Policy, Macroeconomic Modelling, Natural Resource Issues, and Industrial Policy Issues.
Teaching: Faculty leads courses in Microeconomics, Industrial Economics, International Economics, Statistical Theory, Mathematical Economics, Research Methodologies, and Energy/Petroleum Economics, and Environmental Economics.
