Pan-Atlantic University recently hosted the AWAKE Campaign’s documentary screenings and awareness sessions. The initiative, led by 2024 alumna Ireayooluwanitemi Olota (known as Ire Belles), aims to raise awareness of cervical cancer prevention through film and informed dialogue.
The AWAKE documentary, originally produced by Olota as her final year project at the School of Media and Communication, highlights the silent yet preventable cervical cancer crisis in Nigeria. The campaign seeks to educate students and staff on the importance of early detection and proactive health management. Screenings were held in two physical sessions at the Ibadan Classroom and the Port Harcourt Classroom, followed by a virtual session.
The virtual session featured an expert presentation by Dr. Wahome Ngare, a seasoned Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with over 30 years of experience in women’s health. Dr. Ngare provided valuable insights on cervical cancer prevention, emphasising the importance of regular screening. He advised women to undergo a Pap smear every five years to detect precancerous changes early. He also highlighted that Human Papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection, is the primary cause of cervical cancer, and that early detection of HPV infection can significantly improve health outcomes. Dr. Ngare encouraged all women to prioritise regular medical check-ups and proactive health management.
Cervical cancer remains one of the most preventable forms of cancer, yet it continues to pose a significant health challenge in Nigeria due to low awareness and limited screening uptake. Through the AWAKE campaign, Pan-Atlantic University continues to demonstrate its commitment to student-led initiatives that address critical public health issues.

The University commends Ire Belles and all participants for their dedication to this important cause. Greater awareness and collective action remain essential in the fight against cervical cancer.
