Public Lecture: Professor Saheed Aderinto Explores Knowledge and Creative Transformations in the 21st Century

On June 29, 2026, the Institute of Humanities at Pan-Atlantic University hosted a compelling public lecture delivered by Professor Saheed Aderinto. Professor Aderinto, a distinguished historian at Florida International University and Founder of the Lagos Studies Association, spoke on the topic “Knowledge and Creative Transformations in the 21st Century.”

In his address, Professor Aderinto examined how knowledge is being reshaped in the digital era. He highlighted the role of creative documentation through a brief documentary segment on the women of Fuji music. The presentation revealed that while Fuji music became commercial in the 1960s, women have been actively involved in the genre since the 1970s, demonstrating greater inclusivity than often acknowledged. Professor Aderinto emphasised that social media has become vital to his research, as it produces shared and continuously revised data. According to him, social media consolidates knowledge by presenting it in its simplest and most accessible form, though this also raises important questions about the commodification of media and information.

He further observed that social formations are currently evolving faster than traditional academic paradigms. Creative research, he argued, creates room for authenticity, and knowledge is most valuable when it can be effectively transmitted across platforms and audiences. Professor Aderinto noted that books and documentaries do not replace each other but instead complement one another. He concluded that knowledge in the 21st century must be creative, with technology serving as a powerful tool to solidify and preserve it.

Dr. Folakemi Ogungbe remarked that the use of documentary in the lecture resonates strongly with Pan-Atlantic University’s focus on experiential learning. She added that while knowledge has boundaries, imagination does not, and creative approaches to knowledge offer powerful ways for individuals and societies to reinvent themselves.

The lecture was followed by an interactive question and answer session, during which participants engaged Professor Aderinto on various themes raised. The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Adaora Onaga, who expressed appreciation to the guest speaker and all attendees for their active participation.

The public lecture reinforced Pan-Atlantic University’s commitment to fostering dynamic intellectual conversations that bridge academia, culture, technology, and real-world experience. Such events continue to inspire students and faculty to think creatively and critically as they prepare to become responsible leaders in a rapidly changing world.
