Advancing Inclusion at Pan-Atlantic University: A Letter from the GEDI Office

At Pan-Atlantic University (PAU), inclusion is not viewed as a single initiative, but as an ongoing institutional commitment, one that continues to evolve thoughtfully and intentionally across our campus community.

Over the past year, significant strides have been made toward strengthening accessibility, equity, diversity, and inclusion within the University. This work has been closely connected to the establishment and development of the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Pan-Atlantic University, which has helped catalyse broader conversations and institutional action around access, opportunity, and student support for underserved communities.

As part of this evolving framework, the Gender, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (GEDI) function within Student Affairs currently serves as the University’s coordinating inclusion unit, supporting accessibility initiatives, student support coordination, sensitisation efforts, and the ongoing development of more formalised inclusion structures and policies.

Building a More Accessible Campus

Over the last academic year, PAU has focused on strengthening physical accessibility and improving the student experience across key areas of campus life.

Some milestones include:

  • Expansion and improvement of accessible ramps across selected campus locations
  • Ongoing installation and optimisation of elevators to improve mobility access across buildings
  • Introduction of campus wayfinding and accessibility navigation initiatives
  • Sensitisation and awareness engagements on disability inclusion and equitable participation
  • Increased cross-departmental collaboration between Student Affairs, Campus Planning, Maintenance, and other operational units to support accessibility planning

These efforts are part of a phased and sustainable approach to accessibility development—one designed to grow intentionally over time while aligning with institutional capacity and long-term planning.

Student Support and Inclusive Engagement

PAU continues to strengthen support structures that contribute to student well-being, mentorship, and participation across campus life.

Through Student Affairs and associated student support services, students have access to mentoring, welfare support, counselling, and academic guidance initiatives that foster a sense of belonging, growth, and successful participation within the University community.

The University also continues to encourage student-led engagement and peer participation through volunteer inclusion initiatives and awareness-building activities that promote empathy, respect, and shared responsibility within campus culture.

Expanding Access Through the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program

The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program has further strengthened PAU’s commitment to educational access for underserved communities, including young women, refugees and displaced persons, and persons with disabilities.

The programme provides comprehensive scholarship support and seeks to create pathways for talented young people who may otherwise face barriers to accessing higher education. Inclusion and equitable participation remain central to the programme’s long-term vision at PAU.

As the University continues to expand its accessibility journey, current efforts are focused not only on physical access but also on gradually strengthening support systems for a broader range of disabilities and inclusion needs across academic and student life.

Looking Ahead

PAU recognises that meaningful inclusion requires continuous learning, collaboration, and institutional reflection.

Work is ongoing to develop further robust Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) structures, including formal policy development, stakeholder engagement, and expanded accessibility planning to reflect the evolving needs of the University community.

While there is still more work to be done, the progress made over the past year reflects an important step toward building a campus environment where all members of the community can learn, contribute, and thrive with dignity.

Inclusion at PAU is a journey—one being built steadily, responsibly, and with long-term impact in mind.
